Thanksgiving Foods and Your Dog

As we gather to celebrate this Thanksgiving, the family dog can often be found begging around table for his share of scraps that he is thankful for .  However, you can avoid an unplanned trip to the vet with a sick dog if you know what foods to avoid giving your dogs this holiday season.

 Foods to avoid include

  • Cooked bones
  • Dressing
  • Onions, garlic, chives
  • Yeast dough
  • Grapes and Raisins
  • Chocolate
  • Fatty and spicy foods
  • Salted foods and nuts

Theobromine found in chocolate and xylitol, an artificial sweetener found in many foods including some peanut butters and gums, are often deadly to dogs. Check labels closely for xylitol before giving your dog any commercial food not intended specifically for dogs

Onions and nuts can be gastrointestinal irritants causing diarrhea and vomiting, salty foods may cause sodium poisoning, whereas grapes and raisins can cause kidney damage.  A vet consultation or visit is indicated for any dog suffering from being fed these foods from the table  or from an accidental ingestion.

Foods that are safe to feed your dog include:

  • Plain green beans
  • Raw Pumpkin
  • Skinless turkey
  • Apples
  • Carrots
  • Plain sweet potatoes

Avoid the temptation of your guests feeding your dog table scraps by preparing your dog his very own Thanksgiving meal in advance. Check out the website  https://topdogtips.com/best-thanksgiving-dinner-recipes-for-dogs/ for recipe ideas .  If cooking a separate meal for your dog seems a bit overwhelming, simply cut back on the amount of kibble you normally feed your dog and top it off with some of unseasoned “safe” foods such as skinless turkey, green beans, or sweet potatoes.  Your dog will thank you !!
